About Wolverhampton
Wolverhampton is a bustling city right at the heart of the West Midlands. Home to Wolverhampton Wanderers, it’s a city steeped in history. Previously called Wulfrun, Wolverhampton was founded in 985 and was historically part of Staffordshire. The name Wulfrun comes from the Anglo-Saxon Wulfrūnehēantūn however, it is also said that the city may have got its name from the Mercer King – Wulfereēantūn meaning Wulfhere’s high or principal enclosure or farm. The variation on the name was first seen in medieval records where Wolveren Hampton was recorded.
Wolverhampton became significant as a market town and was especially know for the woollen trade. Like neighbouring town and cities, during the Industrial Revolution, Wolverhampton became a major centre for coal mining as well as steel production, lock making and the manufacture of cars and motorcycles. To this very day, the economy of the city is still mostly based on engineering.
Wolverhampton is located northwest of Birmingham, and it is a second largest part of the West Midlands conurbation with the Staffordshire and Shropshire countryside lying to the north and west. Wolverhampton city centre is just outside of the area which is known as The Black Country which includes districts such as Bilston, Heath Town with the Willenhall side of Wolverhampton falling within the Black Country coalfields. Although Wolverhampton has no major rivers flowing through it, this city has several tributaries of the River Trent, the River Penk and the River Tame which rise in the city, as well as Smestow Brook, which is a tributary of the River Stour.
What to do when wandering around Wolverhampton.
If you are thinking of taking your Heavenly Courtesan out on a date in Wolverhampton, you’ll find yourself spoilt for choice. For natural beauty, why not visit Baggeridge Country Park which is only 4 miles from the centre of Wolverhampton where you can choose from a number of walking trails (lasting approximately 90mins) and plenty of picnic spots.
Continuing of the outdoors theme, Bantock House Museum and Park offer ornamental gardens and quintessential English landscapes that cannot fail to warm the cockles of one’s heart.
Visit Himley Hall and Park to the south of Wolverhampton. A splendid Palladian mansion dating back to the 18th Century and positioned within 18 acres of parkland designed by Capability Brown who was the leading landscape architect of the period. There is a boating lake and a nine-hole course for the avid golfers and a pitch and putt for the less enamoured! You can also fish here although I imagine that you might have other interests to keep you occupied on your visit to Wolverhampton.
RAF Museum Cosford is a must for anyone fascinated by aviation. It has four hangers and is stuffed full of exhibitions dealing with the entire history of aviation including War in the Air which showcases a century of military aircraft such as Sopwith byplanes and the Japanese Mitsubishi Ki-46.
If you are looking for something more gentile (and perhaps more romantic) then visit the idyllic rose garden of David Austin the acclaimed rose breeder. You will find no less than 700 varieties across two acres of manicured gardens. Refreshments can be found in the tearoom and the afternoon tea is not to be missed.
While Wolverhampton doesn’t immediately spring to mind as a city of culture you’ll find the Neoclassical style Wolverhampton Art Gallery built from Bath stone in 1884 a worthwhile visit. The building is impressive on its own, however inside you will find treasures from the Victorian age such as the Pre-Raphaelites as well as more modern pieces from Fuseli and Zoffany.
Visit the Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre, a grade 11 listed building dating from the 1890’s seating 1200 and showing dance, comedy and tribute acts.
Of course, it’s hard to site Wolverhampton without mentioning the Wolverhampton Wanderers affectionately known worldwide as the Wolves. Visit the Molineux Stadium dating back to the 1889 and seating close to 31,000 and see the statue of Billy Wright who spent his whole career at the club and earned more the 100 England caps.
